When one visits Matamata in New Zealand’s North Island , it becomes clear straight away why this place has been chosen as a perfect spot for the movie set of Tolkien’s book. The book was translated into over 70 languages so majority of us know it. It is a must see place if you’re a fan of the movie and the books, but if you are not familiar with Lord of the Rings, Hobbits, Wizards and the Shire or simply not a fan of it, well… as they say, it is never too late for a happy childhood.

The area is extensive, so save good few hours to do it properly. Pre-book the tour as it is always busy and fully booked in advance. You will be taken around the 12 acre set: past Hobbit Holes, the Mill into the world-famous Green Dragon Inn where you can have a drink, something to eat and just enjoy the magic around you.
